Sea Captains House, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Eating’s not a bad way to get to know a place.”

Michael Pollan

When Joe and I first arrived in Myrtle Beach, it was lunchtime and we decided to look for a good place to eat seafood with a view. I looked up reviews of restaurants in the area and found The Sea Captains Restaurant had great reviews. So we followed the directions to North Ocean Blvd and found the attractive restaurant. This restaurant looks like a regular house with gorgeous landscaping, nestled in between large high rises and backs right up to the ocean.

As we entered the restaurant, we were warmly greeted by the hostess who guided us back to one of the many dining rooms. We were thrilled that we had such a great view of the ocean. Our waitress, Danielle arrived soon after and took our drink order and gave us time to check out the menu. The menu was impressive and we were told they buy all their fresh produce and seafood locally. Danielle was very nice, attentive, and was valuable in helping us decide what to eat.

When the food came out, it was fantastic. We loved everything we had ordered and the food was fresh, hot, and tasty. Danielle gave us a little information about the history of the restaurant while we were there. Henry Taylor, who was from High Point, NC built a vacation home at this location in 1930. He visited this cottage more than ten years, until he decided to sell in the 1940’s to Charles Angle. Then to his misfortune, Hurricane Hazel came in 1954 destroying the ocean front porch he had built on the seaside of the cottage. Charles sold the property to Nellie G. Howard who decided to open up a guesthouse and called it “Howard’s Manor”. There were nine rooms to be rented and they served three meals a day.

Then in 1962, they sold Howard’s Manor to the Brittain family who planned to have it torn down but held onto it for a couple years while trying to work out finances. Instead, they opened up a restaurant that served three meals a day. It took off with having great food and ever since become one of the most popular and beloved restaurants in the area for locals as well as visitors. They specialize in seafood platters, shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, as well as many other dishes.

This restaurant has served the community for over 50 years, has won more awards than any other restaurant in Myrtle Beach. It is also one of the oldest restaurants along the Grand Strand. Southern Living Magazine named it best seafood restaurant for four years in a row. You can’t beat the view or atmosphere of this restaurant and if you are aiming to get a great seafood meal, this is the place.

We walked around outside this restaurant towards the ocean and there is a nice grassy area before the ocean with lovely gardens, outside tables, and even a lovely swing to sit and relax. Check them out at https://www.seacaptains.com. They are located at 3002 N. Ocean Boulevard, Myrtle Beach, SC and their phone number is 843-448-8082. They are still open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

We highly recommend this restaurant and hope that if you are in Myrtle Beach, you will give this restaurant a try. We know you will not be disappointed. We will be back.

Take care and bye for now.
