“Praise
the bridge that carried you over.”

Another
destination today. We found another covered bridge to see in Georgia
so we took off to go to Royston, Georgia the home of Ty Cobb. There
is a small museum there in his honor but we did not stop today. We
drove through town and headed to the bridge. We pulled into a dirt
road next to a house and drove a short ways till we saw the bridge.
This
is a one lane bridge that is only a pedestrian bridge now. The bridge
was built in 1907 and is 132 feet long and put together by wooden
pegs. It is a beautiful bridge to see with all its glorious details.
They have let some of the shrubbery take over so you can not see all
of the bridge. They did cut a path to the river so you can get a good
view from there. I do hope they will cut back some of the overgrowth
as this bridge is a charmer and well worth a visit.
The
Cromer family settled in Franklin County in 1845 and operated a
Woolen mill. This area maintained a cotton gin, flour mill, and a saw
mill but all where closed by 1943. James M. Hunt built this bridge
with the Town lattice design where planks crisscross at 45 to 60
degree angles and connected by wooden pegs. What at a beautiful
relic of days gone by.
It
goes over the Nail Creek and also goes by the name of Nail Creek
Covered Bridge. It was in bad shape at one time but it was restored
in 1999. The bridge had a twist in it that they fixed with steel
bracing. It is owned by the county.
