Parc Guell, Barcelona, Spain

Nothing is art if it does not come from nature.”
Antoni Gaudi

One of the many famous sites to see in Barcelona is Parc Guell which is located on Camel Hill in the Collserola mountain range. It is in the Gracia District in the La Salut neighborhood of Barcelona. Joe and I have been fans of Antoni Gaudi’s architectural art and design since we came to Barcelona back in 1985.

The straight line belongs to men, the curved one to God.”
Antoni Gaudi

Our bus tour took us to the top of Camel Hill and let us out near the main gate. I loved how they painted all the cement barriers in bright colors and designs in the parking area. We were very excited about getting into the park and seeing the amazing park. This park was the idea of Eusebi Guell, a Spanish Entrepreneur who bought this land in 1900 and planned to build an estate for the rich. His idea was to design a closed development for sixty families. It was to be a garden city. He employed Antoni Gaudi to build it and design the layout. They were friends and I read a quote that Gaudi said to Guell, “Sometimes I think we are the only people who like this architecture.” Wherein Guell replied,” I don’t like your architecture, I respect it.”

Those who look for the laws of Nature as a support for their new works collaborate with the creator.”
Antoni Gaudi

In the end, the park only had two homes in it that were built. The Larrard House is where Guell lived. Antoni Gaudi moved in with his family and father in 1906 to the house that is now the museum and stayed till 1925. This was the only house he ever bought. Guell died in 1918 at which time his heirs sold the park to the city. The park was built between 1900 to 1914 and was officially opened in 1926.

Artist do not need monuments erected for them because their works are their monuments.”
Antoni Gaudi

I adored all the mosaic work and loved the curves and shapes of the benches and overhangs. There were crowds but we still managed to get around and see a lot. Gaudi is wonderful at combining nature with art. He was an architect during the Naturalistic phase in the first decade of the twentieth century.

The views were absolutely gorgeous from the park high above the city. What an amazing park. Gaudi combines nature with his art in this park and it is a masterpiece. The details were amazing. There was so much to see in such a little amount of time that we were allotted at this stop. We wished we had more time as we thoroughly enjoyed this park and would highly recommend it to all. Tomorrow we will do beautiful things.”
