Robins Air Force Base Famcamp, Georgia

The earth has music for those who listen.”
William Shakespeare

This weekend we wanted to get away to see the Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon, Georgia so we decided to check out the Famcamp on Robins Air Force Base since it is only twenty miles from downtown Macon. Joe and I had stayed there years ago when our children, Jason and Jeannine were young. We had memories of walking around Luna Lake with the kids running in front of us showing us the way, with our very special dog, Tut. Tut, you say, like King Tut? We felt the name was appropriate since he was a 120 pound mutt that looked like a junkyard dog but was the sweetest, gentlest dog and watched over us and our children at all times.

When we pulled into this campground, neither Joe nor I recognized it. The lake looked as beautiful as it did when we were here years ago but where we were able to camp seemed different. We pulled in after hours in our mini conversion Astro van after a stop at the class six store to buy us a bottle of wine. We got to the Famcamp before sunset and it was just beautiful with the sun shining on Luna Lake.

We set up our van in the perfect position in the overflow lot and pulled out our lawn chairs. Our bed was already made in the van so our set up for camping was complete. Before we got too comfortable we decided to take a walk around the lake. This area is very beautiful with the tall Georgia Pines and peaceful lake with the ducks swimming by and the geese flying over. We stopped at the restrooms on the way back and found them to be very clean. Then we walked around the heavily treed campground and looked at all the beautiful RV’s that were there. Many of them looked like they had been there for quite a while. We walked towards the lake and checked out the playground and the covered, screened pavilion. The pavilion is up near the lake so it would be a nice location for a get together and there were barbecue grills just outside of it.

It was a beautiful evening as we sat there in our lawn chairs, facing the lake with our bottle of wine and doing cheers to each other for having another special day together. A couple walked up to us and said, “Now that is the way to enjoy a night.” We told them, that is what we thought also. We talked for quite a while with them and really enjoyed hearing of their RV adventures. They had traveled all over the US and up into Alaska and had lots of funny stories to tell about their journeys. We dreamed of being retired so we could have more adventures around the country in our little mini van. It is great being a part of the military family as there is always something to talk about and something in common. They told us about the alligator that lurks in Luna Lake. We walked with them to where it basks in the sun, but it wasn’t there. We wondered if it would stop by and visit us later that night.

We enjoyed the quiet of the area as the sun set and when it was dark, we climbed into our traveling abode and watched a show on our TV before going to sleep. Life is good.

This recreation area can be used by Active duty, National Guard, Reservist, Retired, 100 DAV, DoD civilians, and guests. There are 27 RV sites for W/20,30,50 A/S for $15 a day or $90 a week. Their are four RV sites with W/20/30 A/S $15 a day and $90 a week. There are three tent sites for $8 a night. You can stay for six months and then move out for fourteen days. There is also an overflow lot which is where we stayed since we were not in tent.

If you are coming with a large RV, you will want to come in Gate Four which is open till ten pm. This base is conveniently located near Macon, Georgia, the fabulous Aviation Museum just outside the gate and Andersonville National Historic Site and Prison. The Famcamp is close to the commissary, base exchange, and gas station yet it feels like you are way out in woods.

The next morning the lake looked so beautiful with the mist rolling over the water  and the lake being perfectly calm like glass.   Still no sign of our friend, the alligator.  So serene.

Retirees are able to eat at the dining hall on Thursday nights, holidays, and breakfast on the weekends. We enjoyed our stay and will be back. It is a good idea to get reservations as it looked pretty full when we were there. Call 478-926-4500 for reservations. Check them out at https://robinsfss.com/famcamp. We recommend this Famcamp if you are in the area. Goodbye for now.
