“If we sip the wine, we find dreams coming upon us out of the
imminent night.”

Driving
to Savannah, we decided to see if there were any local wineries to
check out on our way to our camping trip. That is when we
discovered this winery in the small town of Guyton, Georgia which is
about 30 miles outside of Savannah which was a pleasant surprise. We
put the address into our navigation and we headed to this location.
We drove down beautiful Georgia country roads and turned into the
driveway that headed back to their small family owned winery set back
in the pines.
We
parked and walked up the pathway to the building. It was neatly
landscaped with a welcoming sign just outside the door as we walked
in. When we got inside, both Pamela and Kim both greeted us with
their southern hospitality and asked if we wanted to do a tasting.
But of course we want to. They told us about the three tastings we
could try. One was you can taste three wines for free, the Deluxe
package where you can taste six wines and get a souvenir glass for $4
or the Grand tasting where you can taste 10 wines for $7 and get a
souvenir glass. We went for the gold and chose the Grand tasting.
They
handed us a sheet with their list of all their wines that are all
made on the premises. They explained they buy all the fruit locally
from Georgia farms and told us to pick which ones we wanted to try.
That was a tough choice as there were 26 wines to choose from. They
showed us where the dry wines were, white and red, semi-sweet wines,
sweet wines, and their dessert wines. I chose mostly the white
wines whereas Joe chose mostly red. We enjoyed all the wines and
Joe and I shared the tastings. There wasn’t a bad one in the
bunch.
I love the label on this one. |
Excellent chocolate wine |
That
made it very had to choose which wines we wanted to buy. My favorite
was the Southern Duck Blush, followed by the Sweet Blueberry, and the
Southern Decadence-Chocolate Wine. The Southern Duck Blush was a
blend of strawberries and Riesling and was made to perfection. The
Sweet Blueberry wine tasted as if I just ate fresh blueberries and
was just heavenly. The Southern Decadence-Chocolate Wine was a red
wine that has a dark chocolate taste that would be perfect to finish
off a meal. Joe enjoyed the red wines enjoying the Sanglovese,
Malbec, and Brass Duck Red, and the Cabernet Sauvignon. His
favorite was the Sanglovese as he said the flavor and combination of
cherry, and coffee made it just the perfect blend.
Pamela and Kim |
Pamela
and Kim were wonderful hosts and we enjoyed learning about all the
wines. They told us there is an upcoming event at the winery that
should be a lot of fun. Customer appreciation weekend is Saturday,
November 9th from 11-5 and Sunday, November 10th
from 12:30 – 5 and they will have food trucks, vendors, and
tastings. After tasting, we bought a glass of wine and sat outside
on their patio. You can also buy a cheese and cracker tray to enjoy while sipping your wine.
Joe and Heather |
Heath and Lindsie |
outside patio |
While
we sat outside and enjoyed the fresh air, we got to meet a lovely
couple from Florida, Lindsie and Heath Frederick. We sat and
chatted it up and really enjoyed the company of these two lovely
people. Heath heard my name was Heather and since his name was so
close to mine, that struck up conversation and his sisters name was
Heather. They were spending the weekend in Savannah for Lindsie’s
birthday. We were glad our paths crossed and we had time to sit and
have a glass of wine with them. Cheers.
The pear tree |
my favorite award winning wine |
While
sitting outside, we noticed the pear tree beside the patio that was
loaded with pears. Bill Utter was trying to figure out what to do
with the abundance of pears from that tree back when his daughter was
turning two. That is when he dove into making wine. He had worked
for Piggly Wiggly, the food store for thirty years and decided to
make his hobby into his business. So now he and his wife, Barbara
are the proud owners of Butterducks Winery. There wines are
excellent and they have won awards for a few of their wines,
including The Southern Duck Blush. Their son designed all the labels
for the wines.
They
have 18 stainless steel tanks in their wine making room and they open
it to tours twice a year. They do plan to expand. You can tell they
love their work as the quality of their wines show it. They have
numerous events throughout the year such as Soup N’ Sip Saturdays,
Bills Fall Wine and Pairing Workshop, their Anniversary Celebration,
and Customer Appreciation Day. Many people choose to have their own
events here as well.
Great selection of wine |
awesome gift baskets |
They
have a store that sells their wines, gift baskets, and a few other
things. You can also buy a gift basket to give to that special
someone and make their day. This winery is worth your visit. It
is a short ways from Savannah and little off the beaten path but so
worth it. The staff makes you feel very at home and it makes for a
very relaxed and fun visit. They are open Friday from 11-5, Saturday
11-5, and Sunday 1-5. Check them out at www.butterduckswinery.com.
Joe's favorite wine |
We
give them a thumbs up and will be back to enjoy their luscious wines.
Before we left, we went back in and bought a few bottles to enjoy
while camping. They graced us with a military discount. Thanks for a great time. Bye for now.
