Ten Governors Rail Trail, Edgefield, SC

Walking is man's best medicine.”

Hippocrates

After we ate a lovely lunch at Chef Bob's Cafe and walked through the stores in Edgefield, we drove to see the Ten Governors Rail Trail.   We had been wanting to do this for a while but didn't have the time before.   We had time today and decided to see what it was like.   The trail is about a mile long and paved and is a flat easy trail to walk.   The trail is ten feet wide with plenty of room to walk with your partner by your side or ride your bike.   The trail begins at Slade Lake which is a 36 acre lake and is serenely beautiful.   As we walked along the trail, we were admiring the lake and loved the pretty fountain, fishing pier, and enjoyed watching the active dragon flies glide over the water.  here is a small playground next to the lake right before the trail turns sharply to the right.

Every tenth of a mile is a granite marker that has one of the ten governors of South Carolina that was from Edgefield. How impressive is that! It is just amazing so many governors can be from the same town. As you walk around this trail, you can read the markers and learn a little history as well as getting some exercise. What a fabulous history Edgefield has had. It is great reading if you get a chance. Some how taking the pictures of the Governors,I didn't get one. It looks like I missed Andrew Pickens 1779 to 1838. He was the father of Francis W. Pickens.  At least I got the majority.

The trail goes through neighborhoods, there is a pretty ballpark, and former railroad trestle bridge. I loved the trestle bridge with the old wood floor. This is one of the many trails that was made in the state of South Carolina from former railroad tracks. What a great use of that land. This trail is lite and can be used 24 hours a day.

We really enjoyed the trail and even met some nice workers who were working on the trail. We love South Carolina. The trail is immaculate and very nice with many species of trees along the path. We saw a giant walnut tree as well as a nice pecan tree. This is another great stop and we are tickled we decided to stop here today.
